Building Standards Technical Officer
£34,000 - £42,000 per annum
You will be part of the Welsh Government Construction Unit which is responsible for Building Regulations and associated policy in Wales. This is a developing team as the functions recently transferred to the Welsh Ministers under “The Welsh Ministers (Transfer of Functions) (No. 2) Order 2009 (S.I. 2009/3019)”.
Your role will include responsibility for technical aspects of the Building Regulations and related guidance and a thorough knowledge of the Approved Documents and their practical implementation is essential.
You will be responsible for providing technical advice to Ministers and other Welsh Government departments in relation to all aspects of building regulations including appeals and determinations under the Building Act 1984, related construction standards and the Building Control System.
You will have a good understanding of sustainability standards and the challenges and opportunities they represent. You will be able to analyse complex, technical information and present this simply, briefly and logically to a variety of audiences.
You will be someone who can build effective relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders; to ensure that Welsh Government policy and practice is informed, understood and implemented. You will have the desire to deliver the best, you will be motivated to get things done, and ensure that they are done well.
You will be an experienced construction professional with a recognised industry qualification with substantial proven domestic and non domestic experience; in new build and refurbishment. You will have a recognised professional qualification (RIBA, RICS, ABE or equivalent) as well as practical experience of working in the public or private sector.
You will report to the Building Control Technical Manager.
The post is based in the Welsh Government’s Merthyr Tydfil office although flexible location/working options can be discussed to accommodate an exceptional candidate.
