Your opportunity to join one of the most progressive public sector design teams in the UK.

Croydon is placed to be a major strategic force for growth and transformation in London and the South East, as conveyed in the Council’s Local Plan – Strategic Policies, its award-winning masterplans and the Croydon Opportunity Area Planning Framework. High quality design and placemaking sit at the heart of this vision. Work is already underway on an ambitious programme of regeneration projects including the Council’s £50m Connected Croydon Programme of public realm improvements which will be delivered by 2015.
These posts offer an exciting opportunity for two experienced and motivated design professionals to work within the Spatial Planning Service, which brings together the disciplines of plan making and place making to provide a coordinated approach to the planning and delivery of Croydon’s future development.

Deputy Team Leader Placemaking

You will work within the Placemaking Team of the Spatial Planning Service - recognised as one of the most progressive public sector design teams in the UK. In the role you will assist in leading an award-winning team of placemaking professionals with backgrounds in architecture, planning, urban design, stakeholder engagement, conservation and landscape architecture. You will contribute to the delivery of spatial masterplans, urban design frameworks and Croydon’s LDF; you will provide design advice as part of the Council’s own housing, education and public realm projects and will take a leading role working with applicants and their design teams shaping proposals for major schemes through the Council’s development management process. You will work collaboratively with colleagues across the Council, and especially with those in the Planning Environment Department which includes Development Management, Housing Development and Regeneration, Economic Development, the Capital Delivery Hub and Highways Services, amongst others. You will be expected to continue and further build on the high standard of work with which Croydon’s Placemaking Team has become associated.

The successful candidates will demonstrate experience in the delivery of high quality urban design and a thorough understanding of the planning system. Candidates are expected to have a postgraduate qualification in either architecture or landscape architecture and specific expertise in delivering high quality urban housing and/or public realm projects, as well as experience of strategic urban design, stakeholder engagement and working with local government. In addition to the person specification, the successful candidates will be driven to work in a collaborative environment and will be highly motivated, creative, and able to prioritise a varied and challenging work programme.

Please note that applicants for either post will be considered for both permanent and fixed term posts. If shortlisted, applicants will be invited to one interview which will cover both the permanent and fixed term posts.
