Job Summary    

AECOM is expanding its development planning offer by identifying a Senior Director who will be a key work winner and technical leader; capable of elevating our development planning offer in the UK.   Working in our wider Economics+Planning team, the focus of the role will be on clients and projects that complement AECOM’s portfolio of existing projects and the firm’s strategy to extend our integrated service offer across disciplines, by focusing on strategic sites, regeneration, mixed use development, and strategic housing opportunities.   Whilst this would be a UK role across all sectors, it is expected that the focus of activity and clients will be in London and the south east for private sector clients – working with a client network with which you will be familiar and who will know you as a successful town planning professional.
Job Responsibilities:


  • A Senior Director to grow and lead the development planning team in AECOM with responsibility for the winning and delivery of significant development planning projects in the UK for private and public sector clients. 
  • A leader who can represent the practice to a select group of private sector clients, building on your existing professional profile/network and AECOM’s relationships 
  • Responsible for identified Key Client Management accounts. 
  • A leader who uses their market knowledge and client contacts to elevate the development planning service at AECOM. 
  • An advocate for planning and development practice at industry level 
  • Responsible for the leadership of development planning projects and leading integrated project teams working on large, multi-disciplinary development projects. 
  • Ownership of fiscal responsibilities with projects and assignments and expected to meet financial, marketing, and management goals. 
  • A track record of developing teams. 
  • Generates a positive atmosphere - a 'thank you culture', mentors staff, imparts skills to others and shares knowledge, supervises staff and provides regular feedback on staff performance.

Minimum Requirements    

  • Extensive experience in a property or planning practice with practice leadership, demonstrated through successful projects and profile-raising activities. 
  • London experience, with a recognised profile in the London/South East market and an ambition to grow and extend that profile with AECOM 
  • Relationships with clients across all sectors but particularly with developer/investors/landowners with the opportunity to extend these and grow AECOM’s existing relationships, and developing new town planning relationships. Example clients might include: Grosvenor, Peel Holdings, British Land, Hines, Quintain, Stanhope, Development Securities, Hammerson, Brookfield, Land Securities, Crown Estate 
  • Strong and positive relationships with local authorities and London Government 
  • Existing team leader with a strong planning profile or ‘second’ in a department looking for career development 
  • Demonstrated experience in: 
  • Major project leadership and successfully securing planning permissions Strategic planning advice on major mixed use development sc h emes Expert witness experience at inquiry, EiP, High Court and/or other tribunals Site promotion through planning process S106 advice and negotiations, including CIL 
  • Ability to identify and nurture planning talent and grow successful professional teams 
  • Professional profile in the industry – through RTPI, RICS or London planning forums/networks 
  • Ability to work well both as part of a team and lead cross discipline project teams within the practice and with sub-consultants 
  • A degree in Town Planning (or a related discipline) and an MSc/Dip TP qualification in Planning (or a related discipline) preferred. 
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution (for example RTPI/RICS).
